Tech Centricity

In this podcast Jon Udell interviews Dr. Joel Selanikio. From the writeup: Selanikio is the co-founder of DataDyne, a non-profit consultancy dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of public health data. He works mainly in developing countries where the dominant computer is the cellphone, and the dominant network protocol is SMS...

This is a fascinating examination of how I and most of the readers of this blog are somewhat blinded to the realities of the technical environment in the third world. We pretty much dismiss the notion of developing for cellphones and SMS, but that's the dominant platform in the rest of the world.

Udell's podcast is also available on iTunes, although I'm not sure it's possible to link to an iTunes podcast.

Hi Pete

Nice little blog posting. Interestingly, Jon interviewed me last year about my work, mostly in Africa, which centres around the use of SMS in the non-profit sector. I developed an application to enable NGOs to get on the mobile/SMS ladder. Called FrontlineSMS it's now being used in over 40 countries around the world.

If you're interested, you can read more about FrontlineSMS at http://www.frontlinesms.com or hear Jon's interview with me at http://itc.conversationsnetwork.org/shows/detail1882.html
